Why did Isobel make phone calls to strangers? Why did she stop?

Isobel doesn't fully explain the phone calls she made to strangers. They seem to have been intense calls where she said rude or mean things to the person on the other end of the line. Why do students think she did this? Point out how this is similar in a way to what Isobel's mother would do. Mrs. Callaghan would bother Isobel or her father until they would fight back, and she took satisfaction in that.
