    Jacobs on Ethos, Pathos, Logos

    Kind of Activity:

    Group Work

    Objective:

    to deepen their understanding of Jacobs' argumentative ambitions and strategies

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.9-10.3

    Structure:

    Conduct a brief class-wide discussion on the three rhetorical appeals: logos, ethos, and pathos. This should take about five minutes.

    Then, break the class up into groups of 3-5. Have each group identify at least two examples of each of these three rhetorical devices in the assigned reading. Each student should write at least one paragraph justifying one of the group's six chosen quotes. This should take between fifteen and twenty minutes.
