November 9 Background

November 9 Background

November 9, which was initially published in 2015, is a novel about fate, its connection to love, and love at first sight. It tells the story of a young woman named Fallon, who one day—by pure happenstance—meets a young man named Ben, who wants to become a famous novelist. They are immediately attracted to each other and spend Fallon's final day in Los Angeles together, but Fallon is set to move across the country, something which will complicate their relationship. Still, they maintain a long-distance relationship and meet up every year in L.A. on the day they spent together. Over the years, however, Fallon begins to suspect that Ben is not being completely truthful with her. She fears that he, like their relationship, is built upon a foundation of lies—lies that threaten to destroy their relationship and Fallon herself, who must deal with the fallout from Ben's actions.

Upon their publication, all of Hoover's novels have been well-received. November 9 is no exception. The novel was an instant New York Times bestseller and garnered awards and other accolades from organizations across the globe. Regardless, November 9 was the subject of substantial criticism when it was published. Some critics felt that some of the novel's themes were inappropriate. For example, a well-known book blogger named Jules Buono called Fallon and Ben's relationship dynamic "disturbing" and cited some of the book's more violent and dark themes as two negative aspects of the book.
