November 9 Imagery

Scars

The author uses imagery to illustrate the physical and emotional state of the protagonist. The imagery of "stretched velvet" when Fallon runs her fingers over her scars is especially effective in illustrating her conflicting emotions towards her scars. The phrase stretched velvet is both visually appealing and tactile, which helps the reader to sympathize with Fallon. The phrase also hints at the idea of delicacy and beauty which conflicts with the protagonist’s perception of her scars as something ugly and revolting. This contrast serves to emphasize the protagonist's inner struggle between accepting her physical appearance and trying to hide her flaws.

Intimacy

The imagery of Ben leaning forward to throw away his container in the trash can behind Fallon is used to emphasize the closeness of the two characters. This imagery creates a sense of intimacy between them, as they are now in close proximity to each other. Fallon's body is described as stiffening, indicating that she is feeling a reaction to his closeness to her. The protagonist's gaze then lingers on her eyes and her mouth, and he is described as deliberately flirting with her. This imagery creates tension between the two characters, as Fallon is described as having a look of annoyance on her face, making Ben question whether he has been misreading the vibe between them. It shows the complex emotions between the two characters and emphasizes the intimacy and tension between them.

State of Disarray

The imagery of Fallon’s disheveled appearance is a carefully crafted way to emphasize her state of disarray. Fallon’s hair is described as "a mess," her shirt is stained with mustard, and her nails are clean. All of these descriptions give the reader a vivid picture of the character's current state. Additionally, the fact that the other character recognizes the stain as being from the previous night's dinner indicates that the protagonist has not taken care of herself and has not been paying attention to her appearance. The imagery of the protagonist's appearance emphasizes her rush to get out of that place, the disarray she is in, and the astute observation of the other character.

Passion

The imagery of Fallon being pushed against the wall as they kiss is vivid and evocative. The description of Ben's "hands and chest and lips pressed hungrily against mine" suggests a sense of urgency and desire as the two characters reconnect after a long time apart. The imagery suggests the tension between their physical desire and the underlying emotional ambivalence. She is simultaneously drawn to Ben and yet aware of the danger of giving in to her feelings. The intensity of the moment is heightened by the fact that Fallon is aware that their time together is fleeting, and their paths will soon diverge. Thus, the imagery of the wall serves as a powerful representation of the struggles of love, desire, and heartache.
