After a successful day of gathering abalone, the men are preparing to head home when they see a school of salmon in the water by the boat. They are easy to catch, and the men quickly start pulling them up onto the deck. One of the salmon Miles's dad reels in, however, is already in the mouth of a Mako shark. The shark flies through the air onto the deck of the boat, thrashing wildly. Its tail breaks Martin's leg, and its movements throw the days catch and the men's fishing equipment overboard.
