Favel Parrett is the author of two other novels, When the Night Comes (2014) and There Was Still Love (2019).
Past the Shallows is often described as being part of the Tasmanian Gothic tradition. Marcus Clarke's For the Term of His Natural Life (1870-1872) is considered the first Tasmanian Gothic novel, and the novels of Richard Flanagan, Christopher Koch, and Chloe Hooper are contemporary works in the tradition.
Critics have called Parrett's writing "Wintonesque," recognizing its similarities to the work of the Australian writer Tom Winton.
