Past the Shallows is the first novel by Australian author Favel Parrett, and was published in 2011.
The novel draws from Parrett's experiences growing up in Tasmania, a remote and sparsely populated island state off the southern coast of Australia. It tells the story of two young brothers, Harry and Miles, growing up in a small fishing village in southern Tasmania in the 1980s. The brothers' lives are haunted by family tragedies, dysfunctional relationships, and the isolation of Tasmanian life. Nevertheless, they care for each other and fight for survival in an unforgiving place.
Parrett has said that Past the Shallows was difficult to get published, because she was "completely unknown"...
