Answer
Two everyday examples of a step function (or staircase function) can be:
*A sales agent's salary as a function of goods sold and bonuses received.
*A builder's wage as a function of time spent for doing some particular job and compensation.
Work Step by Step
*Sales agents usually have some fixed salary plus bonuses according to the price of goods sold. For instance, a sales agent's salary might be $\$2000$. If he/she will sell $\$5000$ goods or less then he/she will receive no bonus, if the amount of money exceeds $\$5000$, but is less than $\$10000$, then he/she will receive an additional $\$300$ and if it exceeds $\$10000$ then an additional $\$700$.
*Builders sometimes receive more money for their work if they do it before the time expected. For instance, a builder has to receive $\$1500$ for some particular work. He gets no additional wage if it will take him more than 30 days. But if the builder finishes the work in between 20-30 days, he will receive an additional $\$100$ as a bonus; in the case of 10-20 days, he will receive $\$200$ as a bonus and if he finishes it within 10 days he will get $\$400$ as bonus.
