What does H.D. argue is the role of creativity during times of war and destruction?
H.D. acknowledges that people often find writing (and especially poetry) to be worthless pursuits in the face of evil and important things happening in society. She emphasizes, though, that writing is essential because it is the one thing that survives throughout time--even when books are destroyed, people ask for more. We are attracted to books because their longevity is greater than us. Furthermore, she argues that "without thought," even the sword could not exist. The existence of war is dependent on the word--they are not in opposition.
