The Diary of a Young Girl is often taught in a larger context when students are learning about World War II and the Holocaust, and as such could be paired with other literature focusing on the same time period — Elie Wiesel's Night, for a non-fiction account, or Lois Lowry's Number the Stars and John Boyne's The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, just to name a few. Students might also enjoy Maus, Art Spiegelman's graphic novel that deals with the Holocaust.
Anne's story could also be juxataposed with those of other young people living through difficult times, such as Zlata's Diary, which is the account of 11-year-old Zlata Filipović, living through the Bosnian War.
