    How does Hepzibah's slow progress towards Clifford's room build tension in the scene?

    Hawthorne's slow buildup towards Clifford's room allows us to feel tension as we continue to hope that Hepzibah will somehow be saved. Tension is also created knowing that Judge Pyncheon is waiting in the room below, and knowing that the consequence of bringing those two men together could be catastrophic.
