Melba is terrified as she drives home, worried she will be accused of stealing a white boy’s car. Grandma India and Mother Lois are equally terrified. Link calls Melba and they arrange for her to drop it off at a local ice cream shop. From then on, Link looks out for Melba though she is never fully sure if she can trust him or if it's a long con to make her feel safe before a deadly ambush. She begins to implement her grandmother’s tactic of thanking her abusers.
