Warriors Don't Cry is set during the American Civil Rights Movement. As such, racial segregation, discrimination, and disenfranchisement are portrayed throughout the book. It recounts scenes with racial slurs, attempted sexual assaults, as well as overt, intense, and repeated racially motivated violence; suicidal thoughts are also depicted. This material may be triggering to some students and the teacher should warn the class ahead of time about each of these occurrences. Avoid the use of any racial slurs in the classroom; if utilizing a direct quote from the text, write the slur as "n*****."
