Throughout the book, Nancy has been a person who speaks with great confidence and thinks highly of herself. To discover that she lied about menstruating may be a shock for some students; for others, it might seem as though it was predictable. Nancy needs other people—particularly Margaret, it seems—to see her as a confident and mature person, but students might note that she shows immaturity by lying, and that in spite of the girls' obsessive fixation with periods, she is tremendously fearful when hers finally comes.
