When he refused to kill American soldiers he was sentenced to death at the age of 16. An SS Officer stopped his death and he later escaped and went into hiding until the war was over. He now speaks out regularly against right-wing extremism and is a member of the Amadeu Antonio Foundation. He was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in The Flight of the Phoenix.
