Although father and son are cruel to each other, they also seem to have some degree of trust and mutual respect. These contradictory elements complicate their relationship. It seems likely that Big Daddy is telling the truth when he says he's always liked Brick better than the other members of their family, and that Brick is telling the truth when he says he's always wished he could talk to Big Daddy instead of hearing Big Daddy pontificate. The men seem able to hurt each other like no one else can, in part because they do at some level think well of each other.
