Chapter 17 - Citric Acid Cycle - Exercises - Page 586: 24

Answer

Beri beri is caused by deficiency of Vitamine B1 (thiamine). Co enzyme of Vitamine B1 is TPP (thiamine pyrophosphate), this catalyze the oxidative decarboxylation reaction catalyzed by PDH, alpha keto gluterate dehydrogenase, brach chain keto acid dehydrogenase. In deficiency of Vitamine B1 pyruvate, alpha keto gluterate (intermediate of TCA cycle), brach chain acids will accumulate. As their catabolism is based on utilization of Vitamine B1.
