Chapter 17 - Citric Acid Cycle - Exercises - Page 586: 4

Answer

Acidosis - It is a condition in which the pH of the blood drops below 7.35. Citric acid cycle intermediates are all acids, which helps in the increased production of hydrogen ions in the body that would lead to a decrease in blood pH (acidosis). These also may create an inability to form bicarbonate ions in the kidney. In citric acid cycle, alpha-ketoglutaric acid, fumaric acid, succinic acid, malic acid, pyruvic acid, and citric acid etc.,. are the intermediates and are necessary to generate cellular energy for tissue fuel.
