    Why might Shakespeare have included the scene at Marseilles?

    Some students might observe that this scene creates suspense—that the audience becomes more invested in what Helen, Diana, and the Widow have planned when they're not able to see it happen right away. In addition, knowing the confrontation will take place at Rossillion might create some suspense for Helen herself—she might feel at greater risk returning to Rossillion. Students might also note that the Gentleman builds up some expectations when he speaks to the King in Act V, Scene 3, which allows the King to receive the note with greater uncertainty than he might have in a direct confrontation.
