Jules et Jim Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Jules et Jim Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Love

The statue on the island of the woman’s face becomes the idealized symbol of love for both Jules and Jim.

Race

Catherine races Jim and Jules on a walkway in Paris. She begins before them in order to win. Her false start is a symbol of how she plays by her own rules at the expense of everyone else involved.

Jim’s Hand

We watch as Catherine takes Jim’s hand early in the film while she’s with Jules. It is a symbol that she is drifting from Jules.

Iron Ground

The ground in Germany has been turned into grave-sites, as it has been filled with so much lead from the bombings that it is unusable. This is a symbol for how the characters have changed internally and have become hardened after the war, different.

Monastery

Catherine calls her and Jules’ home a monastery. This is a symbol of her hatred of being confined by formal structures.
