Chapter 11 - Enzymatic Catalysis - Exercises - Page 359: 14

Answer

The binding site and catalytic site are two sites of the active site of the enzyme. The binding site contains residues that selecting and binding the proper substrate. The catalytic site contains residues that perform the catalytic reaction on the molecule of the substrate. The difference between the two is mostly structural and conformational - each site contain different residues of amino acids that create a distinct structural shape It is meaningless to distinguish between them because they have the same chemical properties, moreover we cannot see them with naked eyes and the difference between their conformers and their structure is very minute and they share mostly the similar properties. So, it is meaningless to distinguish between binding sites and catalytic sites of the enzymes.
