Exegesis of The Good Samaritan: Unconditional Love College
The book of Luke is one of the several gospels of the Bible that delineate the life of Jesus. Providing one account of Jesus’ teachings, this gospel contains numerous parables that he uses to convey the Christian life to both his disciples and the people of the time. This exegesis will specifically focus on the parable of the Good Samaritan in chapter 10, from verses twenty-five to thirty-seven. Concentrating on the idea of the neighbor, “Luke has mostly displaced [this idea] with a heavily edited version of the tradition about the greatest commandment in the Law.”[1] There is a move from passive to active definitions of the word and connections are made between the love of God and the love of neighbor. It is likely that this gospel adopted features and stories from the Gospel of Mark and it identifies these first two commandments “in a first-century Palestinian Jewish setting.”[2] This gospel can also be described as a gospel for the poor and marginalized.[3] Although that is not entirely what the gospel is based on, there are several elements of economic destitution. There is recognition of vulnerability to sickness and death, as well as those who are culturally, socially, religiously, or economically diminished in society....
